
News from the salt is that the American Striper Association's 2009 tournament series is coming to Stratford's
Boardwalk Marina this coming Saturday. Anglers from all over the east coast will compete and try their best to catch the two biggest Striped Bass during the one day event.
The ASA is considered the nation's "Premier Striper Tournament Series". In 2009 the ASA will be conducting 8 tournaments along the eastern seaboard from North Carolina to Cape Cod. Striper enthusiasts can choose to fish local tournaments, a division or compete for the prestigious Angler of the Year Award presented to the ASA Boat Captain that exhibits the skills needed to earn the bragging rights as the Nation's best Striped Bass angler. Prizes will also be awarded to the Top Jr. and Female Angler at the end of the 2009 season. There is still plenty of time for local anglers to enter. Those interested should visit ww.fishasa.com
Striper fishing continued to be excellent last week with the best action coming in the early morning hours and after dark.
Captain Jim Sinclair of Oxford landed 10 Bass Wednesday evening with several over 25 pounds near Middle-ground Lighthouse. The largest fish of the evening measured in at 45 inches and weighed 40 plus pounds.
In addition to Stripers, tons of small Bluefish schools have been blitzing small baitfish and sand-eels from Penfield Reef to New Haven Harbor.
Barry Mucci of Shelton and his 9 year old nephew Spencer Biebel of Trumbull had a great day of fishing on Sunday. The two anglers ran across the pond to Port Jefferson for some catch and release Fluke fishing landing several fish in the 20-21 inch range. Spencer was high hook for the day but his Uncle Barry retained his title as Sea Robin Champion. Barry and Spencer also landed several Bluefish on top water lures during their ride home
Ken Greenhill, owner of Housatonic Bait & Tackle located in Flagship marina on the lower Housatonic River in Milford reported that they are open for business and that fishing locally has been hot. The new store is right
next to the river and Ken wanted to let anglers know that they will deliver bait and gear right to the dock for easy access for boat fishermen.
Jimmy O's Bait and Tackle employee and local fishing legend John Posh of Stratford said that the upper Housatonic fly-fishing is as good as he has ever seen it. John reported that numerous hatches are taking place daily and Brown and Rainbow trout up to 20 inches have been feeding aggressively.
Paul Dinice of Derby confirmed that the trout fishing in the upper Housy has been excellent. Paul, along with several friends had tons of action on both dry flies and nymphs with Several Rainbows and Browns exceeding the 20 inch mark.
