GO FISH! June 23th, 2009

The endless amounts of Rain and the confusion over the new CT Saltwater license were the hot topics amongst anglers last week.

Rain and thunder showers kept many anglers from fishing, but with plenty more rain in the forecast anglers will need to pick and choose their spots in order to  catch some fish and stay dry at the same time.

For many anglers, rain, wind and turbulent seas are more than enough to keep them away from the water.  For others, the constantly changing weather of New England is just an added challenge which is dealt with while pursuing  their next trophy catch.

Steve and Clark Anderson Sr. of Shelton, along with Bill Markut of Monroe and Jesse Butwell of Naugatuck chose to battle the elements this past weekend during an annual trip to Lake Ontario in Rochester New York.  The four anglers braved unseasonably cold temperatures, rough waters and blinding rains but still managed to land 10 beautiful Lake Trout up to 15 pounds, despite of the harsh conditions. Salt Water License Required Next Week For Long Island Sound?

As many of you have heard already CT will now require a Saltwater fishing license. While the bill has been passed it has not yet been signed off on. In all likelihood it will be and will go into effect next week (June 15th) Like many area anglers, I am not personally against this license but believe that this money needs to be allocated to programs regarding fishery management, patrolling, safety and public access rather than into the states general fund.

I would love to hear your thoughts and views on this and encourage everyone to let their local and state officials know their feeling on this.

I have included an email I received from Bill Foreman from the DEP Fisheries Division so you could better understand what is going on: Read more

News from the salt is that the American Striper Association's 2009 tournament series is coming to Stratford's http://fothr.org/files/images/9-year-old-Spencer-Biebel-of-Trumbull-displays-one-of-the-20-plus-inch-FLuke-he-caught-on-Sunday-at-Port-Jefferson.Boardwalk Marina this coming Saturday.  Anglers from all over the east coast will compete and try their best to catch the two biggest Striped Bass during the one day event.
The ASA is considered the nation's "Premier Striper Tournament Series".  In 2009 the ASA will be conducting 8 tournaments along the eastern seaboard from North Carolina to Cape Cod. Striper enthusiasts can choose to fish local tournaments, a division or compete for the prestigious Angler of the Year Award presented to the ASA Boat Captain that exhibits the skills needed to earn the bragging rights as the Nation's best Striped Bass angler. Prizes will also be awarded to the Top Jr. and Female Angler at the end of the 2009 season. There is still plenty of time for local anglers to enter.  Those interested should visit ww.fishasa.com

May18th Fishing

There is nothing I enjoy more than visiting our states local bait and tackle shops to keep a pulse on the fishing scene. Anglers gather and trade fish stories, tactics and news of the water while shopping for the next great lure or bait that is sure to land the big one.

I do my best to visit the many shops and the great people who own and operated them as often as I can and I am happy to share with my readers the stories and buzz that has been coming out of them this week. Read more

Anglers From Hous-Stock at Short Beach last weekend pose for a group shot.jpg

Blackfishing season closed April 30th and will not re-open until July 1st much to the disappointment of many local anglers who did not find time to get in on the action before the seasons end. Blackfish or Tautog, as they are referred to locally, are excellent table fare and a favorite of many fishermen throughout our local waters. They live amongst the various rocks and structure and that is exactly where anglers found them for some end of season action last week.

Tautog up to 12 pounds were caught fishing the Break wall of the Housatonic River and both New Haven and Clinton Break walls each produced several fish over 10 pounds. Read more

http://fothr.org/files/three-and-a-half-year-old-Sam-Bottone-of-Shelton-proudly-shows-of-his-first-Trout-ever I would like to start this week's report by commending the numerous volunteers who  took part in the various environmental clean ups that took place as part of the earth day celebration.
As anglers, we too have a great responsibility to protect and improve our states shoreline and bodies of water which we use and enjoy.  That is why I'm happy to tell you there is still time to do your part to improve one of the most important local water ways.   Read more
